Knight Pierce Hirst asked:

Jean-Jacques Attisso, a 31-year-old French entrepreneur, combined his advertising skills with cans made by a client and created Obama Soda. It’s a bubblegum-tasting soft drink in a red and blue can that features Obama’s picture and “Yes We Can” slogan. The soda isn’t available in markets. Attisso uses it to inspire kids living in some of France’s poorest, mostly black, housing projects.  He tells them Obama’s story, reminding them that 50 years ago blacks in America road in the back of buses and now President Obama rides in limousines. Attisso is putting the can in “Yes We Can”.

Shirley Corriher, a food scientist, puts the “Yes We Can” into making cookies. In her book “Bakewise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking” there’s a tip to prevent cookies from crumbling. According to Corriher, a tablespoon of water should be added to a cup of the flour used in making the cookies. The 2 proteins in flour – glutenin and gliadin – hold onto the water and make strong elastic sheets of gluten. It’s the gluten that holds the cookies together. This tip could be a tasteful way of removing the phrase “That’s how the cookie crumbles” from the English language.

Jim Shafer’s language is architecture. He designs houses with interior wood paneling, stainless steel kitchens and built-in bookcases - but he thinks small. The smallest house he’s designed is 65 square feet and the largest is a 3-bedroom mansion of 774 square feet. What Shafer describes as practical living allowed him to trade the rat race for peace of mind. He lives comfortably on $15,000 a year in a 100-square-foot house, is mortgage free, has purged his life of unnecessary things and does what he loves. Maybe Shafer should advertise his houses as being too small for big problems.

Amal Suleiman overcame cultural problems to become the first female wedding registrar in the Muslim world. Because her husband’s uncle had held the position in an area outside Cairo, her husband suggested she apply for it. Suleiman overcame local male resistance by taking her case to the head of the provincial family court and was accepted along with 10 male applicants. After being chosen the most qualified, her name was sent to Cairo for approval. After several months and some prodding by a local columnist for the Minister of Justice’s approval, Suleiman’s appointment was announced – and still echoes throughout that very conservative society.
