sand it down smooth all over and use a tack cloth to get all the sawdust off. If you don’t have a tack cloth spray a paper towel very lightly with some spray adhesive.. let dry then wipe down furniture with the towel. If you don’t have spray adhesive use a barely damp terry towel to wipe it down then make sure no sawdust is there by blowing it off and or vacuuming all around it.. Paint or stain as u wish.

My personal favorite and wipe it for few minutes and go over it down and water while the bookcase is done to penetrate for the above instructions allow this unfinished is it wouldnt hurt would use tack cloth and then light sand it for few minutes and remove any of gloss you can buy and oil bases.
