The Bookcase: A Cornerstone of Home Furniture
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
Who doesn’t remember sitting in the study or library of their grandparents’ house as a child, looking up in awe at the massive and intricate bookcase replete with volumes that towered up all the way to the height of the ceiling. With these sorts of memories in mind, anybody can appreciate just why the bookcase is one of the most fundamental elements of home furniture. It is not only very functional, offering plenty of space to store the reserves of knowledge and literature that a person may have, but also serving as a good display-bookcases are almost always used to put family portraits and other trinkets on display. In fact, a home can hardly be complete without a quality bookcase, to serve as a center of attention in one of the most used and viewed rooms in the home.
Depending on the particular floor-plan of a home, bookcases are usually kept in one of a few different rooms: for large homes with many rooms, there is usually a room specifically designated as the study or the library; other times, bookcases may also make their way into the living room or TV room, when a separate library is missing in the home. Either way, bookcases usually are the largest piece of furniture in whatever room they happened to be located in, and as a result they tend to set the mood of the room. That means that you should try to model the aesthetic feel of the room around the bookcase, and not vice versa; don’t set up a room full of furniture, and then add the bookcase only to notice that the combination does not work well.
Bookcases come in all sorts of different styles, from very simple geometric and basic styles to more elaborate, intricate and old-fashioned kinds of bookcases. It is important to keep the general dynamics and colors of the home in mind when choosing what kind of bookcase to buy. Nothing can be worse than buying yourself one, taking it home, and cursing yourself because it is actually taller than your ceiling! Always take precise room measurements before going out to shop for bookcases-always.
Exactly what you plan on using your bookcase for will affect your ultimate choice, of course: if you have a ton of books to store in it, then having one with plenty of space will be a big consideration; if you want to use it more ceremonially, to put photos, etc., on display then you will want one with broader, taller shelving. Modern designs have incorporated newer materials into bookcases, such as stainless steel and glass, whereas older styles of bookcases usually were made with nothing but quality wood (like the one in your grandparents’ study). It is important to keep in mind that in order to really be able to load up your bookcase with a lot of stuff (books, trophies, portraits, etc.) then you will have to make sure that it is sturdily built, which generally usually implies a slightly higher price tag.

Give Your Home Character With a Beautiful Bookcase
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
A good home needs good furniture to be complete. Quality furniture is the product of hard work and loving care, and the tradition of crafting quality furniture has been handed down over generations upon generations, perfected over millenia to give us the excellent pieces many of us currently enjoy in our homes. Of all the pieces of furniture we have in our homes, bookcases certainly occupy the most space on average, and the larger varieties would have to be among the most gargantuan pieces of furniture a person can have in their home. In fact, many are so incredibly formidable in size that they need to be brought into the home in pieces, assembled inside the designated room.
In order to give your home character, it is absolutely essential to have at least a few top quality pieces of furniture, and the most dominant furniture in most people’s homes (along with, say, the dining room table) would certainly have to be the bookcases. This particular piece of furniture reflects who we are, our tastes and level of education, more than any other, as the things we fill it with are incredibly telling about where we have been, what we do, what we know, and what we like. Bookcases are filled, more than with anything else, with books, of course; nonetheless, many people choose the bookcase as a place to display many other proud possessions, like family portraits, diplomas, mementos and trinkets, as well as gold and silver adornments. Yet, beyond what we fill it with, the quality of the piece of furniture in and of itself is perhaps the most telling thing of all.
There are all kinds of bookcases to match different tastes and different home arrangements. Though traditionally there wasn’t so much variation, today you can find barrister, ladder, wood or glass door, or even open bookcases. Of course, few things can compare to an antique oak bookcase: the quality and durability of the wood; the exactitude of the unions; the intricacy and detail in the craftsmanship are all details to be admired and prized. The mere value of an antique oak bookcase is enough for some people to want to have one in their home, but take a moment to think about whether or not the ones you come across will fit in nicely in your home. Will the colors combine well with the overall scheme of your home; does its size or dimensions present any possible problems; is it too short or too tall; etc. Don’t rush into buying bookcases, but rather take your time until you come across just the right one. You’ll know it when you do.
Of course, if you plan to actually use your bookcase to store plenty of books and other items, make sure you are actually getting a solid item with strong planks, and not just some old piece of junk that will snap on you within the first few weeks of having things perched on its shelves. Though aesthetics are important, never forget to have functionality as a priority.

5 Easy Ways to Accessorize a Room
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
If you find that the current look of your home is rather boring or you’re just looking for something different, there are many simple ways to spruce things up by accessorizing any room in your home. To give any room an entirely new look, you don’t need a lot of money or an interior decorator. By following these simple suggestions, you can accessorize any room in your home.
Add Some Extra Flair with Throw Pillows
An easy place to start is by adding throw pillows to the sofa or chair. Another simple way to accessorize is to add a throw blanket to the back of the sofa. Just be sure that these items aren’t the exact same color as the sofa or chair, as they should add some interest and design element to the room. For instance, if you have a tan sofa, find decorative pillows where tan is not the main color in the design or pattern. By finding accessories that match other complementary colors in the room, you can really pull the room together.
Update Your Lighting Fixtures
You can give your room a whole new glow by updating your lighting fixtures. Installing new lighting in a room can make a big difference, whether you’re replacing older fixtures or small ones. A variety of fixtures are available that are both inexpensive and easy to install. Be sure to get a fixture that gives off plenty of light to make your room brighter. At the same time, find a design style that fits the room.
Go Green with Your Living Room Accessories
With a simple houseplant or vase of flowers, you can easily add more color to any room. There are some really beautiful fake flower arrangements available at craft stores. If you’re creative enough, you might even make one yourself. Be sure to place the flower arrangement in a prominent spot in the room so it garners lots of attention. You would also want to do this for a houseplant, whether it’s real or fake. To draw more attention to the fireplace, for instance, consider placing two houseplants on either side of it.
Fill Up a Blank Wall with Framed Pictures
Are your walls boring? Try hanging a few picture frames in various shapes and sizes to spice things up. There are so many picture frames available these days that are both unique and stylish. They not only allow you to display your favorite pictures, but they also add some interest to the room. Black-and-white pictures or those with just a touch of color will provide a dramatic look, as will matted images.
Reorganize Knickknacks with Shelving
If your various knickknacks in a room are getting lost in the mix, consider grouping them together on a mantle or shelving on wood bookcases. This way, you can display them together in a stylish arrangement and thus better accessorize the room.
Adding simple accessories allows you to easily redecorate or switch around the style design of a room. If you want to go a little further in reinventing the look, consider moving the furniture around or add new pieces, such as new oak dining room tables. It should be neither hard nor expensive to accessorize a room. By simply getting creative, you can really let your style show.

Phantom Cabinet Lights
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
One of greatest strengths that Phantom cabinet lights offers the architect, builder, or designer is a full range of applications that remove the limits of what you can and cannot light in a build out. Our fixtures can be configured to install directly into new construction cabinets, literally becoming a part of the furniture itself and remaining undetectable from a normal human vantage point. Custom display cabinets, kitchen cabinets, and bookcases can all be constructed with Phantom linear strip lights pre-installed and ready to illuminate their respective contents.
Phantom fixtures also offer more aesthetic flexibility than standard-model linear cabinet lights. The true hallmark of superior cabinet lighting is a color temperature compliments both the wood of the cabinet and the contents thereof. Most interior designers have theretofore felt compelled to restrict their choices to xenon, simply because it has the warmest and most robust of color temperature. This is changing, however, due to a new, patented lamping technology that allows a Phantom LED festoon lamp to equal the luminance output of a xenon lamp and produce a color temperature (2800K) that is such a close match to xenon that you cannot easily distinguish between the two unless you operate them side by side. LED offers the advantages of a heatless light source that consumes little power, making it an ideal luminaire for showcasing displays for long periods of time. Other color temperatures are available in 2950K or 5000K color temperatures, and may work better in certain custom applications than our xenon equivalent. Please keep in mind as well that if you still requisition xenon lamps, the dimmability of our lights allows you to still minimize heat output and extend lamp life at will. See our LED lamp comparison chart for a full explanation of festoon lamp types.
Color temperature alone, however, will not guarantee a superior aesthetic at the end of the day. When lighting displays and bookcases, you will achieve maximum results if you use fixtures that are concealed. While concealed fixtures can be found in many places on the open market, the challenge that many architects and designers often face is finding a concealed lighting source that also distributes light in an even and pleasing fashion. The only way to really accommodate the demand for concealment with the demand for precision lighting is to build a cabinet light that is custom-sized to the individual shelves. Mounting the strip light behind the shelf reveal hides it from open view and allows the festoon lamps that populate its surface to direct light downward and backward onto display contents or book spines. This produces a clean; even wash of decorative lighting from a completely hidden source that is the source of our motto, “See the Light, Not the Fixture.”
When installing our Phantom cabinet lights in new kitchen cabinets, custom cabinets, decorative displays, curio cabinets, and private libraries, builders and designers have a much easier time fitting our equipment to their handiwork than they have when working with standard-model equivalents. For one thing, the customized nature of our product makes it a hand-in-glove fit to the shelves they are installing in whatever cabinet they are constructing. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, our patented wireless cabinet lighting technology allows for a quick installation using only buss bars, metal shelf supports, and brass contact pads. Buss bars are manufactured to match the vertical dimensions of cabinet sides and route into the exterior walls of cabinets. Metal shelf supports are attached to the cabinet interior by screws. Brass contact pads are installed on the undersurface of shelves, and these pads complete a wireless electrical surface when the shelf is laid on top of the supports. The entire installation process takes only as much time as needed to route the channels for the buss bars and attach the shelf supports, contact pads, and cabinet lighting strips.
Occasionally, we are contacted by designers who want to know if we can light existing displays that are either very old or feature unique structural nuances. Our answer is always yes, provided the cabinet does NOT have a mirrored back plane or glass backing. For designers looking to upgrade the appearance of existing displays that lack adequate lighting, Phantom engineers have developed a number of ingenious retrofit wiring methods, custom trims, and ingenious installation methods that will allow you to install our fixtures in any type of cabinet with a solid back plane. Visit our cabinet lighting FAQ’s.
These projects are best worked out in partnership with a cabinet lighting specialist who can customize not only the product, but the method of installation to your particular upgrade or interior design plans.
Your search for a quality cabinet lighting manufacturer is now over. Homeowners, businesses, and art galleries have been using Phantom Lighting to give their designs the extra brilliance it requires. Most lighting manufacturers give you the product, but not the high-level of service that comes with a top-notch illumination company. Why settle for another manufacturer? Request a DVD Catalog, or contact one of our lighting agents today and come see what magic we have in store for you.

Choosing a safe baby changing table
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
Diapering can be messy and uncomfortable for both parent and baby. A changing table makes the task much less troublesome by creating a safe and comfortable place for baby that is also comfortable and convenient for a parent to use. As new parents, you’ll be changing a tremendous amount of diapers for the next year or so. A changing table is essential to the well planned and organized nursery.
As it is now compulsory in Scotland for all relevant Business Premises such as Pubs, Restaurants, Retail Stores and any other organization that provide toilets for their customers, to provide a Baby Changing Unit, then In Scotland there is no choice but to comply, or risk a hefty fine!
This is expected to be introduced in England and Wales making it compulsory for everyone!
You can change a baby’s diaper on any flat surface with a protective pad, changing tables can make diapering more convenient, since they raise the baby up to a comfortable height and provide a place to store diapering supplies. You can buy changing tables in many baby departments and stores, or you can place a changing pad on a sturdy, appropriately sized dresser or bookcase. Since many changing tables are made to match a crib, you may want to choose a changing table at the same time you choose the other nursery furniture.
Changing tables come in a variety of styles and with various features to fit different lifestyles. From the very basic table with just a little storage to the elaborate fine furniture combination piece that will last for many years and everything in-between. With all of the beautiful styles available, you’ll be sure to find one that complements your nursery. Many are so well designed they actually grow with your baby or can be used as other pieces of furniture when a changing table is no longer needed.
What you should be looking in Baby changing table
Durability:
This is perhaps the most important quality in a changing table. You’ll need a table that is sturdy, one with solid legs and good joint connections that doesn’t wobble. Purchasing online is often a good way to get a great price so look for a well-known name and a listing of the high-quality features. When in doubt call customer service and ask questions, they are a valuable resource for information when searching for products online and often receive training directly from the manufacturers and can contact them directly for you for any clarification.
Safety Straps:
Most changing tables do come with safety straps, pass on any that do not. The safety straps allow you to strap your baby down comfortably so he or she can’t roll off the table.
Guardrails:
All good changing tables have some kind of a guard rail all the way around and the higher they are the better. This is important because although guardrails do not replace safety straps they are an extra safety feature. They also come in pretty handy to keep things like powder and wipes from falling off. Even if baby is strapped in, never walk away- always keep one hand on baby.
Changing pad:
Many changing pads come with the table and some are purchased separately. Those purchased separately come in a variety of styles (flat, contoured, waterproof, disposable, extra plush and even made from organic materials). Look for pads that can be easily cleaned and purchase extra changing pad covers. If you don’t find any to match your nursery it’s easy to custom make a few that are just right. Make a removable cover from fabric you like, then use iron on waterproof plastic that can be purchased at your local fabric store. Or use disposable pads on top of a fabric cover (make sure to have extras!).
Storage:
You will need tons of storage space to organize all the little things that go along with a baby. Many changing tables have great storage drawers built right in, some have open shelving with nice baskets and others are open and waiting for your decorative and organizational stamp. If you want to hide things away then drawers are for you but if you like things open, baskets are great. You’ll need enough storage to put plenty of diapers in easy reach, along with creams, creams, ointments, powders, washcloths, wipes, wipe warmers, a million other necessities, not to mention extra clothes.
What you get for the money:
There are so many models available a new parent can be dazed and confused. There are a wide range of styles and something for every taste and budget.
Look for a changing table that has raised sides or guard rails to help keep the changing pad in place and keep the baby safe. If you want to use a bookcase or dresser as a changing table, consider using a contoured pad with straps that you can attach firmly to the furniture.
Make sure the changing table is sturdy and has a non-toxic finish, with no peeling paint. Changing tables come in a variety of colors, such as white, natural, oak and cherry, so you can choose one that matches your other nursery furniture.
Make sure the height of the changing table is comfortable for you. Most parents prefer the changing table to be about waist high, so they don’t have to bend over or reach up to change the baby.
Select the type of storage compartments you want for the changing table. Some tables have open shelves where you can stack diapers or baskets, while others have closed drawers or cupboards. Some changing tables use a mix of both styles. While open styles can be more convenient, closed style storage systems can help keep older babies out of the supplies.
You can browse wide range of Baby changing tables at Prestige Washrooms UK, They offer High quality baby changing units that cater individuals needs.

America Hollywood Stars Love for Kenya safari Tented Camp
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
Hollywood’s hottest movie stars, actors and music mega stars are taking in African wildlife at two of the continent’s chicest safari camps-Lemarti’s Camp and Cottar’s Safari Service. Uma Thurman and Daniel Craig are fans of Lemarti’s located in the Northern area of Kenya along the Ewaso River. Expect the ultimate in African-chic with wild nature treks and yoga on the water. Thurman, along with Don Cheadle and Ed Norton, has also stayed at Cottar’s located in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve (one of the New Wonders of the World).
This old photo-safari camp boasts wildlife picnics and private outdoor baths, where a zebra or two just might stroll by. Accommodation in safari tented camps. For a nature enthusiast, nothing beats Africa and Kenya is a gem among jewels: Kenya has a high concentration of migrating and native wildlife, birds, open savannah as well as 42 indigenous tribes and sub-tribes, most of which maintain their traditions and dress. Plus, there’s a lot of love for Americans on relation of President Barack Obama’s family ties. For true experience consider a bilateral approach, tour the northern region for authentic cultural immersion and the south for tried and tested wildlife l viewing.
Lemarti’s Camp, Laikipia Plateau - Nestled underneath a massive, centuries-old fig tree, within an oasis of the banks of the Ewaso River, is Anna Trzebinski and Loyapan Lemarti’s “Africa-chic” camp. Trzebinski, an acclaimed Nairobi-born fashion and furniture designer, and Lemarti, her Samburu warrior husband and one of the area’s best nature guides, opened the camp two years ago with a focus on cultural integration. Lemarti and his Laikipia Masai and Samburu warrior pals are in charge of the day-to-day at the camp, and since there are only five tents, the genial and colorfully dressed tribesmen often out number the guests.
Visitors can spend days lounging around the tents, which are richly designed with reclaimed hardwoods, lush native textiles, and an overall nod to Africa (including found elephant jawbone toilet seats!). You can also wander to the river for some fruitful tilapia fishing, take a “Rites of Passage” nature walk with just you and the warriors and their spears, track elephants via Land Rover, and visit the manyatta (or village) of a friendly staffer. Meals are locally sourced, simple and gourmet.
Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp Masai Mara National Reserve - Take White Hunters from the bookcase in the lounge of Cottar’s 1920’s Camp, and open it to the chapter “Trailblazers of the Twenties.” There you’ll find a photo of a hunting party, among whom is Calvin Cottar’s grandfather Mike. The hat he is wearing now sits on top of the bookcase. The Cottar clan is referred to in the book as the Kenya First Family of the safari business. If you want to track the safari bloodline, you go to Cottar’s.
Charles Cottar was not British, but an American inspired by Teddy Roosevelt’s hunting exploits. He moved to Kenya in 1911 and established Cottar’s Safari Service in 1919. A pioneering wildlife cinematographer, he was killed while filming rhinos. The Cottars safari tented camps were among the first to import safari vehicles to Kenya, and Calvin’s father, Glen, established the first fixed camps in the country. Calvin himself, now 38, is said to be one of the models for the safari-god love interest in Francesca Marciano’s Rules of the wild, a 1999 roman à clef about Nairobi’s expat scene.
Today, Cottar’s camp is situated on the lower slopes of a heavily forested hillside, overlooking the green-blond Masai Mara plains and Tanzania’s Serengeti beyond. It’s such a classic vista that you expect the title Out of Africa to scroll across it. “My father hunted here, and I used to ride in the back of the vehicle,” says Calvin, piloting his Land Cruiser through a creek bed. When his father passed away, in 1996, Calvin set up shop on 250,000 acres held by a community of 3,000 Masai on the fringes of the game reserve. He scoured the family storerooms for the furnishings that give Cottar’s its Finch-Hatton feel.
Giraffe Manor Hotel is located in the Karen district, named after “Out of Africa” writer Karen Blixen. The manor’s six rooms overlook verdant grounds that are home to endangered Rothschild giraffes, which pop their heads into rooms looking for a nibble. Also in Nairobi make time for to visit the world-renowned Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where visitors can meet and foster one of many orphaned baby elephants and rhinos. Dame Sheldrick, who lives on the grounds, has created this haven for young elephants and rhinos and to date has hand-reared nearly 100.
While you can make reservations in these camps directly, due to their location and planning involved (transfers, inland carriers, communications, visas, etc.), it is recommended that you book your trip through a reputable Kenya safari company, tour operators and travel company. African safaris and Adventures is one of the most reputable safari travel outfitters specializing in authentic Africa adventure travel with emphasis placed on nature conservation and preservation of indigenous.
