Rebeca Rambal asked:

These days work can be extremely stressful. More and more people are working longer hours and that is leaving them feeling incredibly worn out. Trying to balance work with family life as well as fitting in time for you can be a struggle. However, there are ways in which you can make life a little more relaxed and less stressful.

One way is to apply Feng Shui to your working environment. Since it would enable you to relax while you are working, using Feng Shui in your office could be the best thing you ever did.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui goes by the theory that everything in life has an energy source or Ch’i. Controlling the positive energy sources allows us to benefit and live a more positive life. Feng Shui teaches us how to feed that positive energy and using it to improve our lives.

Feng Shui in the office will consist of re-arranging the furniture if needed, as well as adding different objects or colors representing the elements of nature. We will be following what is called the “Ba Gua”.

A Ba Gua is a tool used to help determine the best locations in your home or office for certain functions, such as wealth, career, health, fame, love, travel and more. The ba gua is a map of the energetic qualities of your space. It is usually shown as an octagon with eight sections surrounding a central area, the tai chi. For practical use, the corners of the ba gua are extended to form a square, and then divide it into nine equal sections. The ba gua divides any space into nine areas. Each area corresponds to a different aspect of your life. Whether there’s good or bad energy in that part of your space will affect the related aspect of your life. You will use this “map” to arrange your office.

Using Ba Gua within the Office

When you are ready to begin, make a rough blueprint of your office space and use the ba gua map to split the area in 9 sections. Then check the map and see which elements you need to incorporate into the office. Aim to keep a good balance between each area so that every aspect of your life benefits from the layout. A good balance is achieved by not having too much of one element and lacking another. Your space has to have a balance of the five elements of Feng Shui: Water, Wood, Metal, Earth, Fire.

One rule of Feng Shui that you should pay attention to in the office, is that the desk should be facing the doorway. This will not only help in a Feng Shui aspect but it will also help you to greet any incoming guests and you’ll never be caught by surprise. When a person enters the room, the first thing that they will see is you at your desk. This gives you an air of importance and helps you look more professional.

Also make sure your back is against a wall, not a window. You need something solid supporting you. If you don’t have another option, try to put a heavy piece of furniture like a bookcase or console between your chair and the window.

If you are interested in increasing your wealth (who isn’t!), then you may want to place a picture of a waterfall on one of the walls related to your Wealth Area. Water is the element responsible for drawing wealth into your life, so items such as a fountain or an aquarium will help too. Plants also brighten up your space and help move the good energy around you. So why not place a plant on your Health and Family Area?

Follow your heart. You’ll feel different about every change you make, so just keep what makes you feel more comfortable. Enjoy!

John Parks asked:

Apartments in New York are famous for being ridiculously tiny. Studio apartments are sometimes barely able to contain a twin bed, never mind any other sort of furniture or appliances. Apartments in New York are also famous for being ridiculously expensive! Some New Yorkers have to work two jobs: one job to pay for their rent, the second to pay for everything else.

Thankfully, with a little creativity you can decorate your New York apartment very cheaply. With a little bit more creativity you can fit a whole house worth of furniture and decorations into an apartment the size of a toddler’s shoe box.

Anybody can go to IKEA and copy one of their floor plan designs. Anybody can copy the decorating page out of a magazine or the style section. These are not tips that you will find on any “fancy” website but they will save you space and money.

1. Get a loft bed. Loft beds can usually be purchased relatively cheaply in New York. You can also construct a loft bed from some tall and sturdy bookcases and an old door. Bolt the bookcases to the floor and then bolt the door over the top of the bookcases. Place your mattress on top of the door. Instant loft bed with plenty of room underneath! If you construct your own loft bed make sure that everything is steady enough to remain standing in the event that you toss and turn in your sleep.

2. Shelving can be constructed by finding old industrial strength milk crates behind New York restaurants and shops and stacking them on top of each other. Purchase some pretty colored spray paint and use the paint to make the otherwise ugly milk crates pretty. These “shelving units” can be used for books, knick knacks, clothing, whatever.

3. You know those huge wooden spools that cable gets rolled onto? If you can find one of those, you have a great table. It’s a little on the short side, but if you stack it on a couple of risers, you should be able to elevate it to a normal table height without problems. Again, you can paint it or, if you don’t feel like painting, simply cover it in a nice piece of fabric and it will look fine!

4. Use a trunk as a coffee table and use it to house blankets and pillows or old books and magazines.

5. To save space in the kitchen use pretty hooks (can be found for pennies in New York’s second hand shops) to hang your pots and pans on the wall. This will free up your cabinets for food or whatever else you need to store. Plus, hanging the pots and pans gives your kitchen wall a great, three dimensional arty look!

6. Use an old dresser as a television stand and then store your DVDs in the drawers! Put the DVD player, video game consoles, VCR, etc. on a small bookshelf that sits next to the television set.

You’ll be surprised at all of the ideas you get as you get into decorating your New York home!

Gen Wright asked:

loves to sit around the warm glow of a fireplace, but most modern home designs don’t allow for large brick or stone mantles. Since contemporary designs rely on the maximization of small spaces, the traditional fireplace has lost its place in new home constructions.

Fireplace loving interior designers have come up with many ways to incorporate the long-standing favorite into modern homes. Contemporary fireplaces are sleek, elegant and space saving. They typically sit close to the wall and can do double duty as storage spots and fascinating focal points. New generation fireplaces also place an emphasis on energy efficiency and practical use, and often provide more heat than their predecessors.

While a traditional fireplace sits out from the wall, with a deep hearth, contemporary fireplaces sit tightly against the wall. Many new designs are metal enclosures built in to the wall itself or a recessed nook. These allow for full use of the space of the room, without stone hearths, and sometimes offer a decorative mantle for books, photos or other display items.

Models that emulate wood burning stoves are also gaining popularity. These metal structures can sit anywhere in the room and complement industrial home decors. Their designs range from stout pot-belly stoves to floor-to-ceiling structures with bookcases on either end. Modern stoves typically use a thin, straight chimneys and burn wood or natural gas. Due to their growing popularity, they’re available in finishes that complement any home style.

Home owners on a budget can also take advantage of the many new models available. Another variation on the wood burning stove, the portable fireplace, is much less expensive than a built in fireplace and doesn’t require a chimney. These units run on a variety of fuel types, such as gel or electricity, and provide the attractive look and warm feel of a traditional wood burning fireplace. Because they are free standing and light, they can be easily moved for extra space or when rearranging the room’s furniture.

Existing fireplaces can be easily resurfaced or replaced to keep up with new decor. If a chimney is already in place, the old fireplace can undergone any level of redecorating. With the help of a contractor or much time and dedication, old fireplaces can receive a new surface or be entirely replaced with modern materials. If the existing chimney is unusable, the firebox can still be used to utilize the low to no smoke methods employed by portable fireplaces.

Interior design websites offer a wide array of information to assist buyers in the process of researching, selecting and purchasing. With so many styles, fuel sources and price points available, practically any home owner can consider a new fireplace an option for their home. Don’t just buy based on price alone. Consider the features and buy what you need.

Heather E. Brown asked:

Buying furniture for electronic equipment and media collections can be challenging. There are TV and entertainment stands, television armoires, wall and modular units, all of which are designed to hold a variety of media. Since media storage comes in a variety of types, styles, sizes and diverse configurations, it might seem like an overwhelming task.

Examine the size of your current selection. Take stock of how many different types of media you own and how many of each kind that you have. This will determine how much room you will need to house your CDs, DVDs, etc. If you have a smaller sized media collection, it is possible that it can be conveniently stored in an entertainment center.

The type of media storage you select will depend on how you wish to organize your collection. When selecting the kind of unit best suited to your requirements, consider accessibility. If you want to be able to spin them around when looking for something, a tower on a swivel base would be the best choice. But if you would prefer to store them out-of-sight in drawers, a wall unit or cabinet with doors would be the ideal solution.

Types of Media Storage Furniture:

Freestanding Wall Units:

Freestanding wall units typically resemble a bookcase and can range from one unit to several ones that fill an entire wall. Although a media storage wall unit might resemble a bookcase, the shelves of a media storage unit tend to be slightly narrower and it is designed specifically to hold a variety of media. When purchasing a freestanding wall unit, keep in mind the number of CDs/DVDs you own. Some units can hold over 1500 CDs. If your collection will never be that large, a smaller unit will probably be ideal for your needs. If you are a serious collector, multimedia wall units with two or more sections will allow you to easily organize and access your collection as it grows and changes.

Wall Mounted Cabinets:

When space is an issue, choose a compact wall mounted cabinet that will hold a large number of CDs/DVDs. To make your collection very accessible, select an open wall unit that will allow you to easily identify and reach stored items. Consider the shape of your wall mounted cabinet. If the wall mounted unit is long and rectangular, it will use the space horizontally, while an oversize, square or tall cabinet will utilize the space vertically. If you are an avid collector and are concerned that this type of media storage will not grow with your collection, many wall mounted units are stackable, meaning you can add more shelving as needed.

Cabinet with Doors:

A multimedia storage cabinet with doors is ideal for someone who wants to protect their collection from dust and light. This type of media storage is also good if there are children in the home. If securing your collection is a further concern, select a CD/DVD cabinet with a turnkey lock. Since many cabinets come with doors that open outward, check to see if opening them will disrupt traffic flow. Because multimedia cabinets have become central pieces of furniture in their own right, it is important to select a color and style that will blend with your current decor.

Spinning tower

Spinning towers combine compact organization solutions with accessibility and convenience. They are specifically designed to use a minimum amount of floor space. Today, spinning media towers are available in sleek, stylish colors and designs versatile enough to fit in anywhere in your home. They are especially useful in small rooms since a revolving rack requires two square feet, but will store a maximum number of CDs/DVDs.

A well designed media storage unit is a useful piece of furniture to have. No matter what kind of media storage you are considering buying, I hope this article has provided you with valuable insights that will help make the decision a little easier.

babypeanut asked:

I am sure that it would be a pain in the ass. I just want to make the experience less painful. My boyfriend and I are going to rent a top floor old tenement flat in Edinburgh. Spiral staircase is the “heritage” of local tenement. Fortunately we’ll be moving in a fully furnished flat. Therefore we don’t really have many furnitures to move. However we do have a bookcase, a few big suitcases and hi-fi equipments. Can anybody share their experience of moving furnitures up the hellish spiral staircase safely and less painfully?

Benard Worseley asked:

If you are taking the entire family on vacation, you will probably be more comfortable in a holiday apartment than a hotel. After all, everyone can stay under one roof rather than scattering to the wind in different lodgings. It is also nice to have access to a full kitchen, as it makes it easier to avoid spending unnecessary money eating at restaurants for every meal. In a regular hotel, you will find it almost impossible to avoid eating out. There are many different types of holiday apartment rentals. Some will be owned by a real estate company. These apartments will have no full time tenant and will exist solely to be rented to people like you. It should still be furnished, but may not have any of the personal touches that one might find in an inhabited home such as full bookcases and all kitchen appliances.

Some rentals are owned by someone who is out of town or moving and needs to sublet. For example, you might be able to find an apartment to live in for a month. Whether you are traveling alone or with others, this is certainly more economical than a hotel. You might pay fifty to seventy dollars a night for a hotel. When renting an apartment, you might get away with five to six hundred dollars for an entire month. Some owners also rent by the week.

Before choosing a holiday apartment, you should make sure you know what you are getting into. After all, there are all levels of rentals. You might be expected to share with a roommate. You could end up with an unfurnished apartment, or an apartment that has minimal furnishings. Make sure that you fully understand what you are looking for. Don’t be afraid to ask for photos if you find it online. Whatever the situation, there are plenty of options out there so don’t settle for something that doesn’t meet your needs.

You may determine that you just don’t want to give up the amenities of a hotel. After all, no one will come to your apartment door and turn the bed, leaving a little mint on the pillow. There may be no pool and certainly there will be no restaurant. You can’t expect room service at any hour in an apartment. If you decide that you’d rather have a home-like experience in a different locale, a holiday apartment is a good choice. Always remember, you get what you pay for. If an apartment is especially cheap, you may not be getting the quality you would like. Be sure to stay informed before choosing a place to rent.
