Gustav Stickley & Craftsman

Katherine Hill asked:
Gustav Stickley, born on March 9, 1858 in Osceola, Wisconsin was a furniture maker, architect and the leading spokesperson for the American Arts and Crafts Movement. He popularized the Arts and Crafts style of architecture during the first two decades of the 20th century.
Gustav Stickley believed that a house should be constructed in harmony with its landscape or surroundings, with special attention paid to local materials. He said that an open floor plan would encourage family interaction and eliminate unnecessary barriers, artificial lights should be kept to a minimum and more attention should be given to natural light (through windows) and the house should have built-in bookcases and benches.
The furniture made by him was simple and useful; it was primarily built from the Native American oak, joinery was exposed, upholstery was carried out with natural materials (canvas and leather), wood could be varnished but never painted, and there were no unnecessary lines. Furniture was smoked to give a dark finish, no nails were used only wooden pegs and beaten copper and iron hardware with bronze touches was employed.
Craftsmen style homes are characterized by various features such as: decorative braces/ beams under gables, simple doors and small windows grouped into 4 or more, wide overhanging eaves with exposed roof rafters under them, huge front porch, heavy use of wood for building home and furniture and cross-members and beams usually exposed inside the homes.
Stickley was a poor businessman and American public began rejecting his designs and architecture in favor of other dynamic and designer homes; in 1915 he filed for bankruptcy, stopping publication of The Craftsman in 1916 and selling Craftsman Farms in 1917. Gustav Stickley died on April 21, 1942.

The stylish printer features a rich, piano-black control panel, and delivers dynamite color at 4ppm and sharp laser text at 17ppm. You’ll also get NO NOIS print engine technology for quiet operation, along with easy-to-change toner cartridges. It features big color and small footprint. With the Samsung CLP-315W color laser printer, it’s not hard to imagine.
As the world’s first wireless colour laser printer the CLP-315W is a compact wireless solution for your colour laser printing needs. Combining sleek styling with great performance this is the ideal solution for those working from home or after a compact solution. Its inbuilt wireless connectivity means that you no longer have to sit beside your printer. Wireless freedom means that you can print from almost anywhere in your home or office (if within range). Its exceptionally quiet printing performance means that this is ideal for a home or office environment. With hi-speed USB 2.0 connectivity for rapid data transfer and simple setup. Compatible with Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista, Various Linux OS, Mac OS x 10.3 - 10.5.
I ordered this printer on the Thursday night and it arrived 12:30 on the Saturday so well done to Amazon for that. When it arrived I unpacked it and plugged it into my laptop with a USB cable ( not supplied ) and ran the setup from the CD. It all went well and the printer was printing about 10-15 minutes after it arrived. Setting up the wifi was not so easy but it wasn’t rocket science either. You have to plug the printer into your router directly using a network cable ( supplied ) then find out what the IP address of the printer is buy going into the router configuration page. Once you have the IP you use a web browser to browse to the address where you get the printer menu. Setting up the wifi after that was a simple case of entering the name of the router and the wap key. Next run the CD on your computer again but this time install for a network printer, this is a clear option on the setup menu of the CD.
Printing is easy and fast and although the photo quality isn’t the best its not bad for a laser and its very fast, 30 seconds for the page to be done. The quality of colour documents is fantastic, very crisp and sharp with solid text and colour. Amazingly it also looks like you get full set of toners as I have printed 20 or 30 full A4 photo’s and countless number of documents yet the toner report its still got 95% capacity left.
All in all I am very happy with the Samsung CLP-315W. Its easy to use, has fast printing and is a very nice looking machine. I got this printer because I was sick of every time I wanted to print something with my old inkjet I had to clean the heads and on some occasions I had to replace perfectly good ink cartridges because they had dried up. Also the WIFI allows me to stick this printer in a cupboard somewhere out of the way. I have my own laptop, my daughters laptop and my son’s PC all connected via the WIFI and it all just works with no drama and no wires.
For the price I would highly recommend this printer.

Bookcase Lighting
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
Russell Neal asked:
Bookcase lighting can best be accomplished using low-profile linear strips that illuminate the contents of shelves from within but remain hidden themselves from the viewer’s line of sight. In the cabinet lighting world, this form of luminance is known as sourceless lighting and produces both powerful and highly aesthetic results. Phantom linear strip lights have earned the reputation of being some of the most unobtrusive fixtures for this type of lighting, and have led to the coining of our motto, “see the light, not the fixture.” In fact, some of the finest results achieved with our lighting fixtures are found in private libraries in residential and commercial settings, where everything from antique shelving to custom-built displays for rare, collector’s hardback can be illuminated from within with wireless, low-voltage lighting fixtures that combine high-end aesthetics with user-friendly operations and optimal electrical safety.
Phantom typically lights bookcases with one of two linear fixture models: the AC (Adjustable Concealed) series, and the AE, (Adjustable Exposed) series. The AC series is designed to be built into cabinets and bookcases at the time of manufacture, whereas the AE series is designed for retrofitting existing cabinets with lights. Normally the AE series is utilized by remodeling contractors who bundle cabinet and bookcase lighting as one of many aspects of a home or office remodel. The AC series is generally used on a larger scale by a variety of contractors, including electrical specialists, general contractors, builders, and of course, cabinet makers themselves.
Phantom linear bookcase lights feature some ingenious engineering found nowhere else in the world of cabinet lighting design. We have patented a virtually wireless cabinet lighting system that negates the need for both gangly wiring and problematic battery power. Using buss bars and metal shelf supports, we have engineered linear strip technology to use metallic structures that are either built into the cabinet or retrofitted to its surface as conductors of low-voltage current. This current neither generates heat nor presents any risk of shock, and is essentially the safest form of bookshelf lighting to utilize for eclectic displays and collections of older books whose covers and pages are exceptionally sensitive.
The process of manufacturing, customizing, lamping, shipping, and providing installation support are all handled through our network of in-house marketing and sales representatives, along with our intercontinental network of Phantom Lighting Agents. These specialists help contractors, interior decorators, and remodelers determine such things as the length of the fixture, the type of festoon lamps to use, and best types of shelf supports and contacts to use in establishing the circuit and concealing the low voltage transformer from public view. The outcome of this process results in a more flexible lighting system for bookcases and book shelves. When our linear strips lights are installed in a bookcase with the right types of shelf support pads and contact pads (one of our biggest sources of superior shelf supports is Knape and Vogt), shelves can actually be removed, cleaned, and rearranged with the linear strips still attached to them. This allows for frequent cleaning and redecorating of the bookcase without risk of electrical shock or damage to the lighting equipment.
Please read more about our AC series and AE series linear cabinet and bookcase lighting supply products here, or download cut sheets on any or all of our art lighting and display lighting products. We also have a new DVD catalogue that can be ordered here. Remember always as well, Phantom’s marketing, manufacturing, and installation support teams are here to help with any and all commercial projects in custom residential and eclectic corporate settings.
We have lighting agents in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America who will answer any questions, provide literature and schematics, and arrange for local product demonstrations. Our team of experienced technicians is always willing to share their knowledge of fine art, display lighting and accent lighting tools.

How To Choose the Right Table Saw
Filed Under bookcases | Comments Off
JT Miller asked:
Congratulations on deciding to finally take the plunge and buy a table saw of your own! A table saw is an amazingly versatile tool which will hopefully give you years of enjoyment and satisfaction. If you’re a handyman or handywoman around the house you’ll find yourself going back to your table saw again and again as new projects arise. Maybe you’ll walk through the living room and decide you need to install some custom-made built-in bookcases. Your table saw will help you rip and cut those boards with a precision that can’t be found in a circular saw.
But buying a table saw for a home work shop is not like going out and buying a hammer or an electric drill. Sure, there are plenty of options and features to decide upon, but tables saws can be large and expensive pieces of equipment and you want to make sure you’re getting exactly what you need and want for years to come.
Here are a few of the things you should consider before buying a table saw for youself:
Size of the saw: This may sound like an obvious one but I know a lot of people who have spent a lot of money on table saws they almost never use because the saw takes up so much room in the shop that it ends up being moved out of the way. If you’re going to buy a cabinet, contractor or hybrid table saw then definitely plan on where you’re going to place the saw and whether or not you’ll have enough room around the front, sides and back of the table saw for feeding in large pieces of wood from time to time. If space is an issue then you may want to consider a benchtop or portable table saw which can be placed on a shelf or in corner when not in use and pulled out on a cart or extentible legs when needed.
Size of your projects: You also need to consider your skill level and what you’re going to be doing with your table saw. If you’re going to be building a spice rack then you probably don’t need a large cabinet table saw and if you’re going to put down wood floors throughout your home with custom shelving and bookcases then a cheap table saw may not suit your needs. Besides considering your current needs also think about your future needs. Do you think you may have larger projects in the future? If so then you may want to purchase a table saw with a few more features then you need currently so that you can “grow” into your saw.
Budget: This is often the deciding factor for many people. Table saws vary widely in price but generally the higher you pay the better quality saw your are getting. A portable table saw can cost between $100 to $500 while a cabinet table saw can cost several thousand dollars. If you’re going to work on a single project and then never plan to use your table saw again then you may want to look for a cheaper saw. If you’re thinking about opening up your own woodworking business then you may want to consider making the investment in a high quality and more expensive table saw.
As long as you take your time while researching your table saw purchase you should do okay. Read through some table saw reviews, consider your needs and your space requirements and balance it against your budget. Then purchase the table saw you are the most comfortable with and let the ripping and cutting fun begin!
