I’m setting up a home office to work out of as a medical transcriptionist. I have the wood (oak) to build a computer desk with a hutch and a matching bookcase. I need a good sized one to hold everything. Where can I get some woodworking plans to build this type desk, hutch, and bookcase?

I am looking for a TALL CHEAP BOOKCASE and have yet to find one for a price I could afford. I am a stay-at-home mom and any GOOD advice would be appreciated.

I’m planning on building a foldable, small bookcase for college, but I’m not sure whether it would be cheaper just to buy one or not. What do you guys think?

I’ve read that metholated spirits can work (use it to clean the ones with glossy covers, maybe?) or bury them in lots of bicarb soda? throw them out because it’s lost cause? They’re precious ‘art’ books, so I’d like to try to salvage them somehow.

Do I call carpenters or what?
I know what I want. The bookcase I want is really expensive in the store and it’s so simple to make, but I am not good at handyman things.

I live in an apartment and was considering getting the large Ikea Expedit bookcase as a room didvider. Does anyone have one that knows if they can be easily disassembled when it’s time to move? Some furniture I have put together before (not Ikea) had fasteners that cannot be removed again. I don’t think the Ikea bookcase would fit down the hallway stairs fully assembled. I asked an Ikea employee but I think he was just saying what he thought I wanted to hear. Has anyone actually had one that they have disassmbled and then reassembled?

We bought an unfinished alder bookcase and are painting it white. We are using latex paint.

We used a latex primer to start with and now we’re putting on the paint. We’ve been using a roller for larger areas and a 2″ angle brush to get into small areas and crevices.

It’s mostly working but we’re getting some brush marks and some gloppiness and some areas feel very rough.

Maybe sanding and doing another coat will help?

Also, I saw Osh selling foam brushes 2 for a dollar. Are foam brushes a good choice or should we stick with our synthetic brushes and roller?
We’re using an Easy Living semi-gloss latex paint, which was recommended to us at Osh. Hmmm. Would an oil-based paint be a lot better? Can we do another coat of oil-based paint right on top of the latex or do we need to strip this baby down?

Brent
